Potential is being realized in Washington state with this Portuguese grape, particularly on warm sites such as the Newhouse family’s historic Upland Vineyard on Snipes Mountain — in the heart of the Yakima Valley. Done in a dry, table wine style, the nose offers baked cherry, black currant and blueberry along with hints of Ovaltine, NECCO Wafer, rose hips, sweet dill and vetiver. Inside, it’s candied plum and Bing cherry with filbert and dark chocolate. The medium body offers a rather satiny feel on the midpalate before a racy and savory finish of Montmorency cherry and black olive pit. Their wines are available at the tasting bar adjacent to their Wine o’Clock Bistro in Prosser’s Vintners Village as well as the BNU Tasting Room in the Woodinville Warehouse District.
