The Mortimers refer to the array of clones they planted throughout their Parrett Mountain retreat from Newberg, Ore., in naming this reserve-style Pinot Noir, and Chehalem Mountains winemaker Scott Shull of Raptor Ridge renown weaves in seven clones from the 14-acre vineyard. That figure accounts for just half of the 14 clones they’ve established, and Shull traditionally has featured the underrated Mariafeld clone from Switzerland in this cuvee. He’s been responsible for Diversité since 2008 and this production – about half of the 2012 vintage – is showing as a robust and heavier style of Pinot Noir. There’s a dark and nutty theme of toasted almond and crushed walnut, backed by red currant, Montmorency cherry and forest floor earthiness. Dusty tannins, pomegranate acidity and French roast coffee make for a stylish finish.
