Judging by the vineyard sources, longtime Walla Walla vintners Nina Buty and Chris Dowsett continue to develop this as an emerging pet project rather than a second label. Acclaimed Horse Heaven Hills planting Phinny Hill, Buty’s organic Rockgarden Estate in The Rocks and stately Conner Lee come together for this energetic blend of Syrah (59%), Cabernet Sauvignon (11%), Cabernet Franc (11%), Malbec (8%), Grenache (7%) and Merlot. It offers scents of blueberry, vanilla bean and clove with a pinch of sweet herbs and underlying tar. Inside, there’s an approachable entry of blueberry, cassis and dried cherry with moderate tannins and tingly acidity. On the way out, caramel, cocoa and cinnamon toast make for a deliciously long finish. Release date for this latest generation of Wildebeest strikes on Halloween.
