Last month, the Armstrongs celebrated their first year of life in the Walla Walla Valley, yet they continue to source from some historic sites in the Yakima Valley, such as venerable Portteus Vineyards. Tim Armstrong’s work with four barrels from this 72-acre Rattlesnake Hills planting, which reaches back to 1982, is deliciously fascinating with aromas of crushed concrete, Bing cherry and clove spice. Inside, it’s filled with black currant and more cherry as flannel-like tannins lead into a finish of fresh blueberry juice. Suggested pairings range from a grilled ribeye to Cougar Gold cheese. These wines are available for purchase in their new Walla Walla tasting room, the original Woodinville tasting room or via shipment to more than 30 states.
