The Mercer family has begun its transition from the entry-level Mercer Canyons brand to Mercer Family Vineyards for what the industry defines as the “ultra-premium” tier of $15 to $19.99. It would seem that as long as the fruit sources remain within the Horse Heaven Hills holdings, essentially all Mercer wines will continue to shine brightly. Indeed, this Merlot bottling hails from Zephyr Ridge and their Dead Canyon planting, and the secret sauce that is Washington Syrah (13%) was off Culloden as well as Dead Canyon. The 20 months in barrel also spanned Jessica Munnell’s handing over the winemaking duties to fellow WSU grad Jeremy Santo, and they combined to build aromas of blackberry, black cherry and clove. The entry of sweet cherries and nicely managed tannins offers pleasing richness, while abundant push of blueberry and pomegranate adds to the vibrancy and lasting power.
