The legacy of Emily Haines — now exploring California winemaking in Amador County — continues to be a stream of rewards, and the Eastern Washington University grad’s work with fits in within the standard established by Butch Milbrandt. It’s 100% Malbec, and 20% of the barrels were new French oak. That helps account for the cocoa powder and clove in the aromas that are joined by dusty blueberry and black cherry. It’s rich and bright with black cherry and blueberry jam flavors that lead to a lovely mouth feel of soft and silky tannins that flow into a a finish of blackcurrant and white pepper. That big juicy finish should marry nicely with a sizzling lamb chop or Milbrandt’s recipe for Perfect Steak.
