Eola-Amity Hills winemaker Rachel Rose turned heads last summer in Seattle by winning a best-of-class award for her work with Tempranillo in Sip magazine’s “Best of” judging. A few weeks later, she struck gold at Anthony Dias Blue’s San Francisco International Wine Competition with this Pinot Noir for proprietors Jon and Kathy Lauer. It’s the flagship wine for this decade-old property near famed sites Bethel Heights and Temperance Hill, and Rose’s winemaking reflects her time in the cellars at both Ponzi and Penner-Ash. Sourced from the Lauer estate as well as Fender’s Rest Vineyard (23%) and Stand Sure Vineyards (21%), this Van Duzer Corridor-influenced Pinot Noir is dark and fruit-focused, led by hints of black cherry punch, plum juice and sweet baking spices. The structure is rich, rewarding and slightly bigger as the slight tug of tannin in the finish merely adds merit.
