A key development in the rise of Westport Winery has been building relationship with sites such as Red Willow Vineyard and Mike Sauer, who owns recreation property in the Grays Harbor area. This cooler site in the foothills of Mount Adams allows this Alsatian grape to show remarkably perfumy aromas of lychee, grapefruit, clove and jasmine with flavors to match. The structure is fruity and elegant yet dry with pink grapefruit acidity to provide winemaker Dana Roberts the tools necessary to balance the residual sugar of 6 percent. And the Roberts family’s on-premise Farm to Fork Restaurant, they suggest a pairing with Mermaids on Horseback — bacon-wrapped prawns in a pineapple-horseradish glazed. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Captain Gray Gewürz go to the Grays Harbor Bishop Center & Symphony. The 2013 vintage of this wine earned a gold medal at the 2016 Savor NW Wine Awards, and this latest release seems destined for similar glory.
