This Prosser, Wash., winery was the first producer to carry Snipes Mountain on a label after the AVA was approved three years ago, and winemaker Gord Taylor continues to support the region his wife – Joan Davenport – helped make official. This is a rare Tempranillo, though it should not be unexpected, considering just how much heat Upland Vineyard gets. This offers aromas of walnut, mint, lavender and black currant, followed by flavors of blackberry, blueberry, black cherry and licorice. Its bold tannins are tempered by flavors of dark chocolate on the finish. It is a superb wine to pair with paella or grilled flank steak.
