When it comes to Washington Cabernet Sauvignon, there is this really cool little neighborhood in Washington’s Horse Heaven Hills. It includes such vineyards as Champoux, Martinez, Palengat and Phinny Hill among them. In the past few years, some of the finest red wines in the state have come from the grapes in this small area just north of the Columbia River. This stunner from Reininger in Walla Walla is no exception. It opens with aromas of black currant, allspice, black olive, black licorice and a hint of oak. On the palate, it reveals dark, juicy flavors of boysenberry and black licorice. Sturdy tannins provide structure without getting in the way of all the gorgeous fruit.
