Among the rewards Al Mathews pours for visitors who make it to his tasting room in the hills near Wenatchee is this blend of Syrah and Zinfandel. The Zinfandel shows itself in the nose as Red Vines licorice, followed by notes of cherry, fresh-baked brownie, mint, black pepper and moist earth. And the Zin shows itself on the palate as a spoonful of strawberry freezer jam, backed by a continue of cherry and the addition of racy raspberries. That acidity and the frontal tannins offer good length in the finish. Enjoy with pasta in a red sauce or barbecued meats.
