Mosquito Fleet Winery 2011 Meritage Portside, Columbia Valley, $34
By Great Northwest Wine on April 8, 2014
Hood Canal winemaker Brian Petersen has this red Meritage-style blend tilt toward Cabernet Sauvignon, hence his veiled nautical reference to the left — as in the legendary Left Bank region of Bordeaux. Aromas bring hints of dark chocolate, black cherry, blueberry, plum skin and pink peppercorns. The drink’s entry is rich with black currant and pomegranate, which presents rousing tannins with good acidity, making for beautiful balance and great length. Here’s just the latest in a string of stunning bottlings from this young winery, and it received a gold medal within the 2014 Capital Food and Wine Festival Wine Competition.
