Westport Winery 2012 Captain Gray Gewürztraminer, Yakima Valley, $25
By Great Northwest Wine on May 1, 2014
The Roberts clan has turned Grays Harbor into wine country in Washington with its fascinating family-friendly operation and yummy releases such as this off-dry style of Gewürztraminer. It carries classic aromas of rosewater, grapefruit, lychee and clove with a bit of petrol and cinnamon stick. The well-crafted drink hints at fresh pear, peach and sweetened yellow grapefruit, and while the residual sugar checks in at 3%, there’s enough acidity present to lift up the fruit nicely. Proceeds from this bottling benefit the Grays Harbor Symphony, and it earned a silver medal at the 2014 Capital Food and Wine Festival Wine Competition.
