Clearwater Canyon Cellars 2012 Verhey Vineyard Malbec, Washington, $28
By Great Northwest Wine on May 22, 2014
This underrated vineyard in Washington’s Rattlesnake Hills has earned a soft spot in the hearts of the Umikers, who are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their winery in Lewiston, Idaho. They poured this in new American oak (30%) for 17 months, which offers aromas of cinnamon, black cherry, black raspberry, black pepper and crushed herbs. What awaits is a big and thick reward of plum and blackberry, backed by fine-grained tannins and juicy acidity. Their wines are available in restaurants and wine shops throughout the Inland Empire, but they also ship direct along the West Coast.
