Last year marked the 30th anniversary of David Padgett’s Horizon’s Edge Winery brand, which has remained a boutique, family-owned winery in the Yakima Valley all along. He’s had his fortified program dialed in for decades, and this Port-style bottling with chocolate is perennially one of his best efforts. It’s a chocolate lover’s delight, beginning with tantalizing aromas of chocolate, coffee, vanilla, raisin and allspice, a blend that smells like a Tootsie Roll. There’s a match on the palate in a huge fashion, making for a rich and delicious after-dinner drink that’s quite warm, but the alcohol is still pleasingly integrated. It earned a gold medal and was selected as best of class at the 2014 Capital Food & Wine Festival Wine Competition.
