The Rhône-themed arm of DeLille Cellars features four vineyards inside this blend of Syrah (71%) and Cabernet Sauvignon — Boushey, Ciel du Cheval, Grand Ciel and Upchurch, and the label carries a painting of Grand Ciel by Beijing native Z.Z. Wei. It makes sense that notes of Syrah take the lead, starting with aromas of black pepper, blackberry fruit leather and plum. Those spill out onto the palate, too, in an inky fashion that already shows a sense of balance with raspberry and pomegranate acidity joined by dusty plum skin tannins. Considering the pedigree, there’s little doubt this will improve with even more maturity.
