Milbrandt Vineyards 2011 Clifton Vineyards Grenache, Wahluke Slope, $28
By Great Northwest Wine on August 4, 2014
Cornell grad Joshua Maloney arrived from Chateau Ste. Michelle’s red wine team just before the 2011 harvest, and it obviously didn’t take him long to adjust. This estate site downriver from Sentinel Gap, which plays a key role in the winery’s Vineyard Series tier, paved the way for aromas of strawberry, Rainier cherry, vanilla and toasted coconut. The drink is remarkable, opening with velvety flavors of black cherry jam, more strawberry and cola. A blend of raspberry and cranberry juice provides elegant acidity, and milk chocolaty tannins lead to a lovely finish.
