Latah Creek Wine Cellars 2012 Hyatt Vineyards Muscat Canelli, Rattlesnake Hills, $11
Best Buy! Spokane winemaker Mike Conway says this is his favorite variety to work with, and he was introduced to his new favorite vineyard for Muscat Canelli as a result of the 2010 freeze. Despite the change, Conway and his daughter Natalie Barnes continue to create one of the Pacific Northwest’s most delicious examples. It starts with aromas of rosewater, lychee nut, ambrosia salad and the cosmetics counter at Macy’s. The delivery of flavors features mango and dried pineapple amid the residual sugar of 4%. There’s not the soapy midpalate often associated with the variety, but there’s ample acidity and pleasing bitterness to balance the sweetness. The family suggest serving this with Ellena’s Mussels with Sweet Chili Twist, a recipe from her latest cookbook that can be found at the tasting room.
