Hip Chicks Do Wine 2013 Viognier, Willamette Valley, $23
By Great Northwest Wine on August 25, 2014
The tail whip of last year’s Typhoon Pabuk wreaked havoc throughout Oregon, and it delayed the pick of this lot from Plagmann Vineyard near Albany until Oct. 13. Notes of Asian pear, dusty lemon and a whiff of smoke lead to rewarding flavors of pear, Jonagold apple and lemongrass. There’s enjoyable balance with just its structure that’s a touch off dry at 1% residual sugar, finishing with a sliver of honeydew melon. Suggested fare takes in curries, grilled chicken or fish with fruit salsa or pairings with mild blue or goat’s milk cheeses. These wines are available at their Portland winery, the Southeast Wine Collective and select Fred Meyer stores.
