The Miller family grows about 30 grape varieties on its 950-acre ranch near Sunnyside, Wash., including four with ties to Italy. Winemaker Marcus Miller keeps the focus on that fruit, rather than barrel, starting with endearing aromas of purple fruit such as blueberry, huckleberry and pomegranate. The structure is juicy, plump and tasty with dark cherry and Damson plum flavors as acidity takes a decisive lead over tannin.
