Airfield Estates 2012 Dauntless, Yakima Valley, $18
By Great Northwest Wine on October 3, 2014
Prosser, Wash., winemaker Marcus Miller builds this blend of estate fruit — named for the World War II dive bomber — as if it’s a Meritage. However, the assemblage of four Bordeaux varieties Merlot (72%), Malbec (13%), Petit Verdot (11%) and Cabernet Franc is offered at a near-bargain price. There are rich oak tones of molasses and toasted walnut with hints of black cherry, ripe raspberry, cola and lilac. The drink brings bold flavors of blackberry and chocolate-covered pomegranate as smooth and sandy tannins give it length.
