Airfield Estates 2011 Vineyard Salute Bombshell Red, Yakima Valley, $20
By Great Northwest Wine on November 23, 2014
One of the most recognized labels produced by this multi-generation grape-growing family, the blend changes from year to year. In the cooler vintage of 2011, it led with Syrah (57%) and Malbec (16%), and those varieties help give it a theme of purple-toned fruit akin to plum, blueberry and Marionberry. There are exotic oaky notes to the nose with clove, patchouli, cocoa and pine resin, while the drink is bold and juicy with splashes of elderberry and cherry joining in.
