Colter’s Creek Winery 2013 Estate Chardonnay, Idaho, $12
Best Buy! Winemaker Melissa Sanborn, and her vineyard manager/husband Mike Pearson are helping to spearhead their group’s petition to establish the Lewis Clark American Viticultural Area for the region surrounding Lewiston, Idaho, and Clarkston, Wash. And they named their young winery for the nearby stream that Lewis & Clark labeled in honor of John Colter — a member of the Corps of Discovery. It takes little exploration to recognize this bottling from their estate Spencer Block as Chardonnay with its presentation in a reserve style from California. There are rich with notes of toasted oak, ripe Jonagold apple and white peach and backed by ample acidity. It’s a delicious expression at a remarkable price and earned a silver medal at the 2014 Idaho Wine Competition.
