Genoa Cellars 2011 Traveler, Red Mountain, $29
The Woodinville Warehouse District winemaking team of Derek Berger and Scott Heinrich continue to impress with their consistently solid and food-friendly releases off Red Mountain. Here’s another Super Tuscan-style with Sangiovese (67%) from Ranch at the End of the Road, joined by Cabernet Sauvignon from Shaw and Scooteney vineyards. The nose features an early sign of Red Mountain with its fresh sage component, followed by hints of cherry pie, blueberry, strawberry and light toast. Rich and chocolate tannins arrive early and lead into flavors of blackberry syrup and ripe blueberry as dried Montmorency cherry and pomegranate acidity creates length. These college buddies from Montana serve this with salmon, sirloin or a slab of lasagna, and their wines are available a a growing number at small wine stores and restaurants throughout the Puget Sound.
