Small House Winery 2012 Red Blend, Washington, $17
Schweitzer Mountain vintners Jon Harding and Patrick Werry have only had their wines on the market for little more than a year, and they’ve achieved some early success, especially with this Grenache (70%)/Syrah (30%) blend. Aromas of Montmorency cherry and strawberry jam on dark toast lead to a big and luscious entry with more of the same flavors, backed by pomegranate acidity that leads to a long finish of vanilla and spice. This earned a silver medal at the 2014 Idaho Wine Competition and followed that up with a silver among Rhône blends at the 2015 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition — matching their performance with their prior vintage the year prior at the largest judging of American wine.
