Mercer Estates 2012 Merlot, Columbia Valley, $26
By Great Northwest Wine on January 31, 2015
Merlot grows as well as any other Bordeaux variety in Washington, and its structure stands up to food and cellaring, too. Rather than overripe and syrupy, there’s a solid backbone and Old World style to this vintage from one of Prosser’s most successful brands. This release shows its 26 months in oak with tones of Chukar Cherry and dusty red currant, backed by dark toast, fresh dill and red bell pepper. Its tangy approach would be ideal with lean beef dishes such marinated London broil influenced by fresh herbs.
