Wild Goose Vineyards 2012 Red Horizon Meritage, Okanagan Valley, $22
Hagen Kruger continues to rack up praise for his nascent red wine program, and he’s done well with this Meritage of Merlot (55%), Cabernet Sauvignon (25%) and Petit Verdot from the family’s Kerry Hill and Secrest vineyards in the southern Okanagan. Lovely oak tones create sweet aromas of a freshly steamed mocha, dark plum and blackberry. On the palate, that oak profile is fairly thick, but so is the fruit, hinting at flavors of blackberry, black currant and dark chocolate. It’s a big wine with moderate frontal tannins and sweeping pomegranate acidity. The Krugers suggest enjoying this with pasta and meats from their Smoke and Oak Bistro — which re-opens in May.
