Kana Winery 2009 Dark Star, Columbia Valley, $22
The team of Yakima physician Palmer Wright has produced red Rhône blends for more than a decade, and they continue to release works of magic with Syrah (60%), Mourvèdre (25%) and Grenache from acclaimed StoneTree, Elerding and Elephant Mountain vineyards. It offers aromas of spicy red currant, raspberry and cranberry that are matched on the palate. The mouth feel is deliciously rich with beautiful acidity that keeps on giving amid lively tannins, a combination that’s capped with white pepper. It earned an “Outstanding!” in last year’s Wine Press Northwest judging of Rhône blends, and it remains showy — picking up a gold medal at the 2015 Seattle Wine and Food Experience Wine Awards. Enjoy it with grilled meats and hearty stews.
