Oak Knoll Winery 2013 Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley, $14
Best Buy! The Vuylsteke clan created this brand 45 years ago in Oregon’s North Willamette Valley, and the second generation furthers its tradition with affordable and food-friendly Pinot Gris — a variety this bucolic winery in Hillsboro has been working with since 1990. Their blend of Cloud Rest, Dion and Sheppard vineyards is oak-free and bone-dry, yet the half of the lot was aged on the lees to build mouth feel. It’s wildly aromatic with hints of kiwi and tangerine joined by fresh-cut Gala apple and white peach. Those who love dry Riesling will especially appreciate the bright and crisp flavors of Granny Smith apple, gooseberry and sweet Meyer lemon, backed by notes of minerality.
