This Eugene, Ore., winery got its start in 1979 — three years before Dan and Helen Dusschee began planting Freedom Hill Vineyard, and their Coastal Range fruit has been a core of Ken Wright’s program for decades. Here, Silvan Ridge winemaker Juan Pablo Valot created a suave Pinot Noir, which opens with aromas of black currant, smoky black cherry and pomegranate, joined by accents of white pepper, lavender and dark toast. There’s elegance starting with the first sip, which is loaded with dark currants and cherries. Smooth bittersweet chocolate tannins and raspberry acidity allow for a finish of Rainier cherry, light vanilla and cocoa powder.
