Canoe Ridge Vineyard 2013 Reserve Chardonnay, Horse Heaven Hills, $20
One would expect a reserve-style Chardonnay such as this to cost twice as much, especially in the Napa Valley where Canoe Ridge Vineyard winemaker Bill Murray came from. Its rich color hints at the richness inside, and the nose opens with butterscotch, lemon curd, toast and jasmine. The drink continues that theme as flavors of tropical fruit and butterscotch are presented with an extremely creamy structure from 100 percent malolactic fermentation. It’s smooth, round and oaky, yet there’s nice balance by flavors of lemon bar and pear, leading to the finish of butterscotch candy that lingers and lingers. For its style, this product of Precept’s estate sites at The Benches and Canoe Ridge Vineyard ranks among the best released in 2015. Enjoy with a Dungeness crab cocktail.
