Bitner Vineyards 2011 Cabernet Shiraz, Snake River Valley, $28
Bee biologist Ron Bitner spent years of research in Australia, which inspired his appreciation for Syrah and pursuit of the red Rhône grape in Idaho’s Snake River Valley. He’s long used the Aussie reference to the grape when labeling these wines, a 50/50 blend with Cabernet Sauvignon that’s robust from start to finish. Barrel notes of toast, tar and clove pick up hints of plum, pomegranate and cigar leaf. Inside, it brings flavors of blackberry, pomegranate and bittersweet chocolate, backed by mouth-filling tannins, bell pepper, black licorice and blueberry. It’s a wine that grows on you with exploration, and judges awarded it a silver medal at the 2015 Idaho Wine Competition.
