Six Prong by Alder Ridge Winery 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills, $17
In the past, bottlings under either the Six Prong or Alder Ridge brands hailed from Precept Wine’s Alder Ridge Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills. However, the Seattle company’s recent purchase of The Benches Vineyard near Wallula Gap adds flexibility and more acclaimed fruit coming into its Alder Ridge production facility. Air Force veteran Mike Prout, a product of Walla Walla Community College’s winemaking program, had a hand in this before moving to Waterbrook, and it opens with aromas of red currant, blackberry, Red Vines licorice, fresh cedar and black olive. The approach to the palate is classic and shows a lighter style with Chelan cherry, red currant jam, smooth tannins and a juicy finish.
