Hat Ranch Winery 2012 Malbec, Snake River Valley, $27
By Great Northwest Wine on October 24, 2015
Texas-trained winemaker Tim Harless reaches into Arena Valley Vineyard, the estate planting for Snake River Winery, for his darkly toned take on this Bordeaux variety that’s emerging as one of Idaho’s most promising red grapes. The nose shows barrel influence of toasted oak and molasses with hints of rich blackberry and black cherry. On the attack, there’s a smooth approach of more blackberry and boysenberry with managed tannins. Ripe raspberry acidity creates length.
