One of Washington state’s most renowned sites for Syrah — StoneTree on the Wahluke Slope — and Francisca’s Vineyard, an erstwhile wheat ranch in the Walla Walla Valley, combine for one of the region’s top expressions of Syrah. Its remarkable nose is effusive with roasted meat, blackberry, blueberry, coffee, baking spice and whiff of funkiness. There’s incredible depth of the concentrated palate, which hints at black currant, roasted plum and blackberry as it picks up tobacco, graphite and blueberry as part of its succulent and elegant finish. This merited a gold medal and best of class at the 2015 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition, an annual scholarship fundraiser for Walla Walla Community College’s viticulture and enology program.
