Grantwood Winery 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, Walla Walla Valley, $22
Walla Walla retirees Joe Grant and Doris Wood produce six wines with a combined total production of 300 cases, and the consistent quality is remarkable — regardless of the almost ridiculously low prices compared with many producers in this corner of Washington state. The combined fruit from Les Collines and Seven Hills vineyards, both managed by the McKibben family, amounts to about a barrel’s worth of a stunning Cab from a cooler vintage. Dark aromas of black cherry and black currant also offer up black pepper and baking spices. On the palate, it’s remarkably expressive as luscious black cherry, huckleberry, black tea and chocolate flavors are presented amid a flawless structure. This earned a gold medal at the 2015 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition, an annual judging that funds scholarships for students at Walla Walla Community College’s Center for Enology & Viticulture.
