Huston Vineyards 2013 Merlot, Snake River Valley, $27
By Great Northwest Wine on December 3, 2015
Sunnyslope Wine District vintners Gregg and Mary Alger collaborated with acclaimed winemaker Melanie Krause to create the Malbec that took best-of-show honors last year at the Idaho Wine Competition, and they laid claim to the top Merlot of this fall’s judging. There’s a richness of oak influence, but those mocha and toast notes don’t overshadow the fruit core, which comes with notes of red currant, plum and juicy blueberry. Hints of green peppercorn and slate add to the charm from this blend of four vineyards: Sawtooth, Skyline, Symms and the Huston estate along Chicken Dinner Road.
Rating: Outstanding!
Production: 140 cases
Alcohol: 14.2%
