In 2013, founding winemaker Rollin Soles began to step away from this iconic property in Dundee, Ore., leaving the Nuthouse and Spirit House to the leadership of his acolyte — Nate Klostermann. The warm vintage was sailing along until mid-September when the torrential remnants Typhoon Pabuk were coming across the Pacific. While many chose to wait out the storm and pick in October after the Pinot Noir clusters shook off the six inches of rain, Klostermann and his team picked the prime blocks from their Lone Star Vineyard on Sept. 18-19. Their work shows with this vibrant, fruit-forward example that opens with aromas of red currant, Montmorency cherry and blood orange. The pour brings flavors of raspberry, dusty currant and pie cherry, wrapped in tingly acidity, milk chocolate tannins and finished with Fee Brothers West Indian Orange Bitters.
