Airfield Estates 2013 Lightning White Wine, Yakima Valley, $20
By Great Northwest Wine on December 25, 2015
Prosser product Marcus Miller, a graduate of Walla Walla Community College’s vaunted winemaking program, pays tribute to the Rhône Valley with this blend of Viognier (59%), Roussanne (35%) and Marsanne from his family’s historic ranch. The Roussanne takes on more prominence in the nose as hints of grassiness and straw leads into sweet lemon, Asian pear and orange peel. The flavor profile of this wine — named for the Lockheed P-38 fighter — features tangerine, Gala apple and hominy, framed by a pleasing mouth feel and capped with a pinch of white pepper. Suggested fare includes smoked salmon, crab cakes, fish tacos, and sautéed scallops.
