Columbia Crest 2013 Grand Estates Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, $12
Best Buy! Cab remains the king of wines and the wine of kings, but you don’t need to pay a king’s ransom for one of Washington state’s easiest drinking – and widely available – examples of Cabernet Sauvignon. Alluring aromas of smoky and dusty oak run alongside black currant, pomegranate, tar, coffee and black pepper. On the pour, there’s remarkable balance with black cherry, black currant and plum flavors as the structure shows no edges, just round and smooth tannins with pomegranate acidity. In the back, there are some hints of earthiness and coffee. Indeed, it’s a rich, big and juicy Cab. Head winemaker Juan Muñoz Oca’s team increased production of this by nearly 100,000 cases since the 2011 vintage, and they don’t seem to have sacrificed a thing.
Rating: Outstanding!
Production: 370,000 cases
