Ponzi Vineyards 2013 Reserve Chardonnay, Willamette Valley, $35
Luisa Ponzi branches out within her Chardonnay program by releasing single-vineyard wines from her family’s estate Avellana and Aurora plantings in the Chehalem Mountains, and this reserve bottling includes both sites as well as Sunset View in the Eola-Amity Hills and Thistle in the Dundee Hills. It offers remarkable complexity from beginning to end, starting with hints of Bosc pear, baked Gala apple, buttery pound cake and lemon zest. Its texture and mouth feel are superb as the orchard fruit shows a bright side among a spoonful of crème brûlée and a lingering sweet lemon juice finish. A touch of Asian pear skin adds to its food-friendliness.
