Schmidt Family Vineyards 2013 Albariño, Applegate Valley, $24
Three generations of the Schmidt family are heavily involved in the day-to-day operation of this charming and serious winery, vineyard and on-premise restaurant near Grants Pass, Ore. Their work with the Spanish white grape Albariño – which can shine in Southern Oregon – opens with alluring aromas of sweet lemon, papaya and starfruit with jasmine and lavender. Good crispness is presented early and throughout with lemon and lime flavors. Beautiful minerality and fresh-cut kiwi fruit make for a long finish. As is tradition, the label features a herb that can help guide a food pairing, in this case marjoram, and family chef Spencer Brons also suggests serving this with its Creamy Seafood Mousse.
