Daven Lore Winery 2014 Dry Riesling, Yakima Valley, $18
Pound-for-pound, one of Prosser’s smallest wineries ranks among the state’s best by showing skill with a wide assortment of grape varieties and offering them in tiny lots at approachable prices. Gordon Taylor returns to Sebastian Vineyard, a 23-year-old site from where he pulls in fruit for both his Sweet Riesling as well as this dry approach, which finishes out at 1% residual sugar. It brings a theme of lychee, dried pineapple and peach yogurt, picking up hints of hazelnut and crème brûlée crust along the way toward a finish of yellow grapefruit pith that includes a pinch of nutmeg. He urges his customers to present this at 55 degrees and serve alongside Croque Monsieur, Kung Pao Shrimp, Showering Rama, a ham-and-cheese sandwich on rye or grilled flatbread featuring baby arugula and fontina.
