Luke Wines 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, Wahluke Slope, $25
Seattle-area vintner Thomas Vogele recently launched this brand spotlighting fruit from the Wahluke Slope – hence the brand name of “Luke.” He sourced from Milbrandt vineyards Clifton Bluff and Clifton Hill and aged the juice in French and American oak for two years. It offers aromas dominated by cherry punch, Marionberry and dark chocolate, accented by hints of mint and molasses. The crowd-pleasing structure of this red is similar to many wines from the Wahluke Slope, bringing lots of black fruit flavors. There’s ample acidity accompanied by a good late grip of tannin, and capped by milk chocolate. Seek out Luke at wine merchants such as Esquin and Pete’s as well as grocers Fred Meyer, Safeway, Total Wine & More, QFC and Whole Foods.
