J. Bookwalter 2013 Foreshadow Merlot, Columbia Valley, $40
By Great Northwest Wine on May 9, 2016
Fruit from 20-year-old vines at Conner Lee and Sagemoor’s Dionysus comes together for this Merlot that helps marks the transition of the winemaking duties from John Bookwalter to Caleb Foster of Buty fame. A skilled hand with the oak – 25% new French oak for 18 months – makes for aromas of milk chocolate and coffee joined by dried purple fruit. Inside, black cherry and black currant flavors combine with a tannin structure of bittersweet chocolate and acid balance akin to Marionberry, making for pleasing length that goes on and on.
