Yakima Valley vintner Robert O. Smasne drives up into the hills south of Prosser, Wash., for this Merlot from decorated grower Mike Andrews. Its layered aromatic profile opens with dark cherry and coffee with a pinch of tarragon and spice. Black cherry, dark toast, herbs de Provence highlight the flavors, which are joined by blueberry skin tannins and Montmorency cherry acidity. This merited a gold medal at the 2016 Cascadia Wine Competition.
