This Walla Walla Valley winery near the stateline laced their annual tribute to Grandpa Vernon Rhodes with a significant dose of Petit Verdot (15%) among the gathering of fruit from Dionysus, Olsen and the Middleton family’s Southwind planting west of Milton-Freewater, Ore. Alluring aromas of blackberry, cherry fruit leather, mocha and minerality lead to bright and juicy flavors of President plum and more blackberry. Montmorency cherry skin tannins and pomegranate acidity lead to a long finish of pie spice. It’s got plenty of life for the cellar, but one of V.R.’s grandkids suggests enjoying this Cab in the meantime with this recipe for Macaroni and Cheese that calls for a bag of Kettle Brand Salt and Fresh-Ground Pepper potato chips.
