Nicole Reese Wines 2013 Syrah, Oregon, $22
Elisabeth Grunwald graduated from Umpqua Community College’s Southern Oregon Wine Institute and transitioned into the assistant winemaking position at Pallet Wine Co., in Medford. The Chicago native has proven to be a quick study with her own young brand, Nicole Reese, named after her two children. And she’s earned a helping hand from Pallet owner Linda Donovan, whose sister grows Syrah from bucolic Valley View Orchards near Ashland. This second commercial vintage of Syrah for Nicole Reese brings aromas of dark blue fruit, cured meat, campfire smoke, hot cobblestones and a bit of funkiness. Inside, it’s more laden with fruit akin to blackberry and black currants, bringing lively acidity with blueberry seed tannin. Lingering vanilla and smoky chocolate flavors make for a finish that’s ideal with Duck Confit or prime rib. Contact her via the Pallet headquarters for more information.
