Martinez & Martinez 2015 May Mae Rosé of Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills, $20
Three generations of the Martinez family are represented in this fun pink wine — owner/grower Sergio, son/winemaker Andrew and granddaughter Mayli Mae. It’s almost unthinkable that fruit from one of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon plantings in this famous neighborhood of the Horse Heaven Hills would be used for rosé, but its beautiful hot pink color and splash of sweetness make this a very popular wine. The nose is reminiscent of strawberry jam and cream cheese, joined by fresh-cut peaches. Its off-dry approach allows for a fruit salad of flavors, creating thoughts of cherry marmalade and more peaches, capped by dried strawberries and a bite of cherry skin tannins in the finish to tighten things up. These fun-loving folks also have a history of offering this in a growler at their tasting room is at the Winemaker’s Loft in Prosser. Enjoy with barbecue chicken.
