Mill Lane Winery NV Rhubarb, Washington, $17
Dan Ferris retired from the Air Force and often draws upon his long history as a basketball referee to create proprietary names for his wines. When it comes to his nongrape wines, he plays it straight. Rhubarb is rarely produced commercially in Washington, but Ferris does it marvelous fashion. Beautiful and fascinating aromas of peppermint, cedar and Christmastime spices develop into flavors of raspberry and strawberry-rhubarb jam, leaving ample acidity to balance the residual sugar of 6%. This merited a gold medal at the 2017 Capital Food and Wine Festival Wine Competition, and it’s available at their tasting rooms in Tenino near Olympia and on Marble Road west of Yakima.
Production: 600 cases
Alcohol: 12%
